The Mango Tree Story: How a SIP Grows Your Money

Dadaji planted one small mango sapling every month. Twenty years later, his orchard explained SIPs and compounding better than any textbook.

One summer evening in Ratnagiri, 14-year-old Riya found her grandfather sitting under a huge mango tree, counting baskets of fruit.

Riya

Dadaji, how did you get so many mango trees? Were you rich?

Dadaji

Not at all, beta! Every month, from my small salary, I bought just one sapling and planted it. Rain or shine, good month or bad month — one sapling.

Riya

But one sapling a month sounds so slow…

Dadaji

That's what everyone said! But after a few years, my first trees started giving mangoes. I sold some and used that money to plant even more trees. The new trees gave mangoes too. Soon, the orchard was growing by itself.

What the story teaches us

A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) works exactly like Dadaji's orchard:

Animation: small seeds of ₹500 drop into the soil every month, and over time a big mango tree grows full of fruit.₹500 every monthTime grows it big 🌳
Watch: small monthly seeds become a big tree
In the storyIn real life
One sapling every monthA fixed amount invested every month (e.g. ₹500)
Trees giving mangoesYour investment earning returns
Planting more trees from mango moneyCompounding — returns earning their own returns
Waiting 20 yearsTime — the most powerful ingredient

₹1.2 lakh → ~₹5 lakh

₹500 a month for 20 years, at an illustrative 12% yearly return. Real returns vary and are never guaranteed.

Why time matters more than amount

Notice the trick: in the first 10 years, the same ₹500 a month grows to only about ₹1.16 lakh. In the next 10 years, it jumps to around ₹5 lakh. Like an orchard, compounding is slow at first and then speeds up — but only if you don't cut the trees early.

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)

Animation: small seeds of ₹500 drop into the soil every month, and over time a big mango tree grows full of fruit.₹500 every monthTime grows it big 🌳
Watch: small monthly seeds become a big tree
